  Chapter 1

Josh sat on the couch in Rachel's apartment. He patiently flipped through the television channels. She went to her bedroom to slip into something more comfortable. They went to dinner at one of his four restaurants, followed by a movie. Rachel picked a chick flick. Josh couldn't wait for the movie to end. They met through his friend Ethan. Both of the men were wealthy, eligible bachelors. Ethan was spending the evening with one of Rachel's friends. They had gone on a double date, but parted ways when the movie ended.

Josh Lewis had a very busy life. He went to college for business and investing. His dream had always been to own a chain of restaurants. In college, his dream was altered, when a horrible accident changed his plans. When Josh graduated from college, he put his restaurant plans aside. He became an EMT and went on to become a firefighter. Josh wanted to save lives. After about five years, he decided it was time to open his first restaurant. There was no way to be both of the people he wanted to be. He went volunteer as a firefighter and put as much time as he could into the restaurant business. Josh knew he would always want to help people and save as many lives as he could. There was no way he would give that up. At forty years old he had opened his fourth restaurant, while still being a firefighter. He was very proud of who he had become and was excited about where his life was headed. Josh had huge plans for his future, and settling down was not part of it. He dated often, but never anything serious. When he had a night free, he would call up one of his female friends to go out. Josh never brought a woman back to his house. His friend Ethan took women home all the time, but Josh felt his house was personal and off limits.

He sat on Rachel's couch, waiting for her to finally come out and join him. It had been a long week and he was happy to have the night free. It had been a few weeks since he had an entire night to himself. He felt his muscles relax as he let out a long breath.

“Would you like a drink?” Rachel called out.

“A beer would be great,” he replied, as he began to relax.

Rachel walked out in a very thin tank top with very tight, revealing shorts. She handed Josh a beer and sat down directly next to him. It was going to be a good night, he thought. Rachel was a bit younger than him. She had long blonde hair, blue eyes, and was very fit. Her legs were long and her ass was tight. She was definitely sexy. Her skimpy clothes did not leave much to the imagination. He really did not know much about her. Ethan's date had set him up on a blind date with Rachel. She knew he was a firefighter, and that seemed to be all that mattered to her. He was thrilled. She would not expect anything from him besides an evening in bed. He would slip out as soon as she fell asleep. There was no need for anything else. His life was perfect that way. She slid her hand onto his lap and up his thigh. Damn she's in a hurry, he thought. That was fine with him. As she grabbed him through his pants, she leaned in and covered his lips with hers. He put his beer on the coffee table, without even taking a sip, and turned toward her. His hand went to the back of her head as he plunged his tongue into her mouth. She reached for his shirt and began to unbutton it, as he slid her tank top over her head and threw it to the side. She leaned over him, and he fell back against the arm of the couch. He could not believe how eager she was as she straddled him. Her hands went straight to his jeans, and she began to unbuttoned them. Just as she was about to unzip them, his phone went off.

  “Shit,” he muttered.

“Get it later,” she said, as she tried to unzip his pants.

He pushed her hand aside and dug into his pocket to grab his phone.

  “I can't,” he growled.

He looked at his phone and jumped off the couch. Crap, he thought. Josh buttoned his jeans and started to button his shirt.

“Damn,” he said. “I have to go.”

“I thought you didn't have to work tonight,” she snapped. “You said we had the whole night together.”

“That's what I thought,” he said. “I'm not on call. It has to be something big. They wouldn't call me if they didn't need me.”

She pouted and threw herself down on the couch.

“You shouldn't have to go,” she said. “Can't they find someone else?”

Josh found himself getting aggravated with her. She cared more about herself than a fire. He felt very strongly about that. That was one number he would be deleting from his phone. All she talked about was him being a firefighter and how amazing it was. When the job called, she thought they should just find someone else.

“It's a fire,” he snapped. “I have to go.”

He made sure he had everything and headed for the door.

“Will you come back after you're done doing whatever it is you firemen do?” she asked.

He looked at her in shock and could feel his face turn red. Could she really be that heartless, he wondered?

“No,” he said, as he slammed her door behind him.

Josh got into his truck and took off. The drive seemed to take forever to the station. He thought about Rachel and how she had just acted. It irritated him when a woman was all excited at the thought of him being a firefighter, but had a different attitude when he had to do his job. What a bitch, he thought. That was one of the reasons he didn't mess with relationships. He didn't have to deal with anyone unless he wanted to, and there was no one to lose if things went bad.

He pulled into the station, jumped out of his truck, and ran to get ready. The whole station had been called in. He was shocked. The men scrambled to get their turnouts and gear ready. They hurried to the trucks and took off. As they got closer, he could see the smoke and flames. It looked pretty bad.

  Chapter 2

Lisa was sound asleep. It had been a long day. She was a flight attendant and had been on a round trip flight from Pennsylvania to Las Vegas and back. It had really kicked her butt. She loved her job, because she was able to see very cool places and travel the world. Some days were harder than others. When she got home, she unpacked her bags, threw on a short and tank top pajama outfit, and fell into her bed. Lisa was looking forward to a good nights sleep.

She was having the strangest dream. There was a weird smell and a l
oud beeping noise. Everything was black. There was no light anywhere. She heard people yelling in between the beeping. Stop it, she thought. Stop that annoying sound. She felt herself yell for the sound to stop. Then she heard a siren and could see red lights. There was a loud sound and her eyes flew open.

The room was so dark and smelled. She couldn't catch her breath as she began to cough. The smell, what was that smell? Shit, smoke. It smelled like smoke, she thought. Lisa tried to stand up, but she couldn't breathe. She got onto the ground and began to crawl for the door. She could see flashing lights around the room and hear sirens from outside. There must have been a fire in the building. She felt dizzy and coughed, as she tried to catch her breath. It was hot. Why was it so hot, she wondered? She stayed low and crawled. A loud sound rang out, and she felt a huge pressure on her leg. She tried to crawl but couldn't. What the hell was going on, she wondered? She tried to breathe in as she pushed her body to crawl. There was pain in her leg as she tried to pull it. The sirens faded away slowly, and everything went black.

The closer they got to the fire, the worse it looked. They pulled up in front of an apartment building. It was crazy. They could see the fire in one of the apartments on the second floor. Everyone from the building was standing on the sidewalk. Josh felt his chest tighten. Get everyone out, he thought. We have to make sure everyone is out. He had not been on a call that scared him that bad in a long time. Most of the calls he went on were medical. This fire had potential to do major harm. The guys scurried around to get the fire under control. They looked around and dove right in. Josh saw an older woman crying on the sidewalk as he passed by her.

“Are you okay?” he asked. “Do you know if anyone is still inside?”

The sirens were loud and he was sure there were detectors inside the apartments going off. It was around eleven o'clock at night, so many of the people would still have been awake.

“The woman in the apartment next to the one on fire, I haven't seen her. I don't know if she was home from work yet. I live next to her. The smoke was so bad. I tried to bang on her door, but I couldn't breathe. I'm not sure if she's in there,” the woman sobbed.

Josh ran over to another firefighter and then took off inside. The guy yelled for him, but he just kept going. If someone was in there, he had to try to help them. When he got up to the second floor, there was smoke everywhere. He could see the flames and ran to the apartment before them. The door was locked. It felt like forever before he finally got into the apartment. He didn't see anyone as he yelled out. There was no reply. If someone was in the apartment asleep, he was not sure they would have been able to answer him. The apartment was filled with smoke. He pushed each door open as fast as he could. The flames were spreading through into the apartment. He pushed the last door open and thought he saw something. Josh moved forward and saw someone. He could tell it was a woman. When he reached her, he saw something blocking her body. There was something over her leg. He worked fast to move it. She was still. There was no coughing or anything. She had to have gotten out of bed, so she must have known there was a fire. He had to get her out of there. Hopefully he had made it in time. He finally removed the piece of wood that was on her leg. Josh was not sure how long he had to get out of there. He scooped the woman up into his arms and took off. Josh tried talking to her, but she did not answer him. He grabbed his mask and put it over her face as he talked to her, hoping she could hear him.

“You'll be okay,” he said calmly. “I'm going to get you out of here. Everything is going to be fine.”

Josh moved as fast as he could. He kept her held against him as much as he could. She coughed and opened her eyes slightly. He talked to her calmly the whole way out.

“Calm down,” he said. “Make sure you stay calm. You are going to be fine. I am going to keep you safe.”

Josh made sure to keep her calm. She coughed a few more times. He was hoping that she would be okay. The woman grabbed his arm and pulled herself into him. She had on tiny shorts and a tank top. He knew she had to have been in bed when the fire started. He could not see her face. She had black in her hair and on her face. Josh was so glad he ran inside to look for her. He knew he couldn't let himself think about it.

Once he was out of the building, he ran her over to the ambulance. Josh let them know that her leg may have been injured pretty badly, as he went to hand her to them. She grabbed him tight.

“They are going to help you,” he said. “Everything is fine now.”

He looked at her and was so thankful that he found her. What would have happened if he had not gone in there? He finished making sure they had her and took off back to the fire. Concentrate, he told himself. She was going to be okay. The woman from the sidewalk stopped him and thanked him for going in to save the woman.

Lisa heard someone calling. She yelled back at them, but no words came out of her mouth. It was black and smelly. The pain in her leg was so strong. She couldn't get up. Everything went black again. She felt something. The pressure on her leg went away. It hurt so bad. She could hear someone. Who was it, she wondered? She tried to open her eyes, but they wouldn't open. There were arms. Someone picked her up. Her eyes opened a tiny bit and she could see a helmet. She could feel herself cough. There was a voice, a soft, calm voice. It was a man. His voice was soothing. She coughed again. That smell, what was it? Who are you, she asked? He didn't answer. There was something on her face. What was on her face, she wondered? She felt herself cling tightly to him. What was going on? She had to figure out who he was. It was black again. Stop it, she thought. The voice kept talking to her and telling her she okay. She coughed again.

The air was better. For some reason, she felt a little better. She opened her eyes a little bit and saw the helmet again. Lisa wanted to see who it was, but she couldn't. Her cough was a little stronger. She felt him start to let go and grabbed him tight. Lisa was afraid to let go.

“They are going to help you,” she heard the voice say.

She let go and felt someone moving her around. Lisa could hear sirens again. What was going on?

  Chapter 3

Lisa could hear a woman talking to her. She could feel movement like she was in a car or something. Slowly she was able to open her eyes all the way. She was feeling better. The air was clear. Ouch, shit, she thought. Her leg hurt so bad. What was wrong with her leg?

“Don't move your ankle,” the woman said. “Keep it still.”

Lisa could see the woman. She was sitting next to her.

  “Who are you?” Lisa asked.

“I'm Beth. You're in an ambulance,” the woman began. “We are taking you to the hospital.”

  “What?” Lisa questioned. “Why?”

“You were in a fire,” the woman said. “I think you might have a broken ankle. Something fell on your leg during the fire. We are almost there. Everything is going to be fine. We just want to make sure your ankle isn't broken and have you checked out from the fire.”

Lisa thought back and ran through her dream in her mind. None of it was a dream. She remembered the smell of smoke, beeping, red lights, and sirens. It was all real. The man who talked to her must have been real too. She remembered not being able to move. Someone had saved her. Lisa suddenly realized she could have died. She did not move as they took her into the hospital.

Her body ached so bad, but she was so glad she could breathe. She waited patiently as the doctors moved around her as they spoke. They asked her a million questions about her breathing, her leg, and the rest of her. She was tired. Lisa wanted to rest. It seemed like they were with her forever. They told her they were sending her for tests. The doctor wanted to make sure she was okay from being in the smoke for so long, and she needed an x-ray done of her ankle. They were pretty sure it was broken. Whatever had fallen on her, fell directly on her ankle. Moving around so much on the way out of the fire could have made it worse. When they brought her back from her tests, they told her that she would be admitte
d no matter what. They had to keep her overnight.

Lisa was scared. She did not know what to do. An overnight hospital stay freaked her out. None of her family lived around her, and she was not close to them at all. The only person she wanted to call was her friend Becky. They had met when Becky moved into the apartment next to hers. Becky was from another state and did not know anyone in Pennsylvania. She had moved there for a new job. The two of them had become close friends. Once Lisa had a hospital room, she picked up the phone and dialed Becky's number. She was so glad she had it memorized. It was three o'clock in the morning. She hoped that Gavin, Becky's fiance, would not be upset that she was calling so late.

By the time someone answered the phone, Lisa was crying. Becky was half asleep when she said hello. Lisa could not stop the tears, as she mumbled into the phone. She knew the words were coming out all messed up, so she tried to slow down. As soon as Lisa told Becky she was in the hospital and that there was a fire, Becky told her she was on her way and hung up.

The doctor came in and sat next to Lisa's bed. He told her, she had a badly broken ankle and would need surgery. She was so scared. Lisa had never even been in a hospital before, so the thought of surgery terrified her. The doctor told her that everything else was okay. She was happy to hear that. It could have been so much worse.

Lisa thought back to the man with the helmet. He saved her life. She had to find him and thank him. Lisa owed him her life. Without him, she might not have made it. She sat and cried.

Becky came through the door and ran to her. She hugged her so tight, as she began to cry. Lisa looked up at her.

“Why are you crying?” Lisa asked.

“You scared the crap out of me,” Becky said. “What the hell happened to you? You look like someone beat you up, and you're covered in black.”

“Do I look that bad?” Lisa asked.

A second later, Gavin walked through the door. Lisa saw his eyes widen and mouth drop open when he looked at her. He walked over without saying a word.
